ROME - The tragedy of the 73 migrants died in the Mediterranean policy refers to its responsibilities. Whose fault is it? How could it happen that an inflatable boat load of people remained at the mercy of the sea for 23 days? Not any sea, but the Mediterranean guarded by Frontex, the European agency for border control. Guarded and yet, once again, turned into a cemetery.
The majority of government in troubled waters after the controversy between the Church and the Northern League, pointing the finger at Malta and Europe. The first would not be able to effectively patrol the sea area within its competence, the second to look away, leaving the weight of the control of entry to countries including, of course, Italy. That, in contrast, would have nothing to reproach themselves.
Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, on the sidelines of the Meeting of Cl in Rimini, has defended the government's work, stressing that the European Union to come only words but not facts. "Immigration is a European problem can not be left only to countries that are outside of Europe - he said - but for now the EU has been limited to the commitments with no real answer." And again: "He has made numerous statements and commitments despite not yet responded to the question of what happens when a group of immigrants arrives at the gates of Europe.
